Behind the Mic: The Craft of Voiceovers, Podcasts and DJ Drops

When you listen to a voiceover, podcast, or DJ drop, it might sound simple — a clear voice delivering the right words. But behind that microphone is a lot more than just speaking.

Each project has its own demands. A DJ drop has to cut through with energy, standing out between songs. A podcast intro needs to set the tone for a whole series, sometimes warm and conversational, other times authoritative. A corporate narration has to feel professional without being robotic.

That means every job requires me to shift gear. It’s not about having “a good voice” — it’s about connecting with the listener and delivering the message the client wants. Tone, pacing, emphasis, and even silence all play a part. AI can deliver voices, AI cannot yet understand the tone and delivery of your project and that’s what sets human’s aside.

I love that variety. One day I might be voicing a podcast intro on health and wellbeing, the next I’m producing punchy lines for a DJ. No two jobs are the same, and that’s what keeps the work exciting.

If you’ve ever thought about VO work or using a voice for your project, the key is simple — know your audience, and know what you want them to feel when they hear it. The right delivery makes all the difference.
