Your audio journey – Part 32 – Compression Part 4

This time we continue to look at compression. Having looked at the basics, news showreel and podcast we now look at making radio imaging and sweepers and compression.

Compression here depends on the type of radio you’re producing for. CHR radio you can afford to be quite hard with compression, AC and Hot AC a little dialled back, and easy listening and MOR radio you should use lighter compression more similar to we looked at for podcasting.

Remember if you’re producing for radio the output from the desk will go through a huge amount of processing before hitting the transmitter. It’s likely to hit a compressor, an auto leveller and hard limiter. For this reason remember what sounds good to you in your monitors or your headphones may well end up over compressed so if in doubt dial back and leave room for the radio station compressor to do it’s work.
