Your audio journey – Part 31 – Compression Part 3

In this episode we look at using compression in podcast production.

The golden rule for Podcast is to use as little compression as possible to create an easy listen without creating a pulsing compressed sound.

With Podcast you have to consider where your audience is likely to be listening. As I write this, the UK is on lockdown due to Covid19, but in usual circumstances people may be listening to your podcast in their car or perhaps in headphones on a train commute.

The human voice has natural fluctuation in level and this creates dynamic range. The trick is to smooth out the levels in the podcast through compression, or the speech volume leveller which is a form of compression, to make sure the quiet parts are audible without making the loud parts unbearably loud.
